VICTORIA FALLS, LIVINGSTONE.

ACCOMMODATION AT BUSHBUCK RIVER HOUSE, LIYOYELO FARM

Our African base is in Zambia at Liyoyelo Farm, close to Livingstone and Victoria Falls.
Here Bushbuck River House is set in 105 acres of bush, on the banks of the Zambezi and is the first property beyond the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park boundary.

The house is an owner run traditional Zambian farmhouse, which has been renovated and thatched to a high standard.
All rooms in the main house are en-suite and there is a swimming pool and pool boma and a tree house/viewing platform overlooking the river.
It is an individual, quiet and relaxing place to stay.

Located approximately 16km from the centre of town the house gives easy access to Livingstone and the Victoria Falls,
whilst also providing a tranquil and secure enviromnent.
Because the property is bounded by the National Park and the Zambezi River there are frequent sightings of bushbuck, waterbuck, elephant, hippo,
duiker, buffalo, cape clawless otter, vervet monkey and baboon. Night sightings of mammals have included scrub hare, thick tailed bushbaby and porcupine.
A recent bird survey listed 263 species within the ground and immediate surroundings, including Pel's Fishing Owl and the shy African Finfoot.
If you enjoy walking there is plenty of opportunity to do so, both on the farm itself and, if water levels are low, on one of the nearby islands in the Zambezi.

BUSHUCK MAIN HOUSE has five en-suite rooms: two large double bedded rooms that can also have a single bed added to make a triple;
two standard double rooms, each with a double bed; one small twin room, with two single beds. Guests in these rooms have access to a lounge with satellite TV.

OUTSIDE THE MAIN HOUSE we have two bedrooms situated in the orchard.
They are next to the outside washrooms and one has balcony views over both the river and the bush. Meals can be taken at the main house or you can self cater.

Accommodation can be on a self catering, bed and breakfast, half board or full board basis
The evening meal is a three course set meal and food is freshly prepared and home cooked. Guests can request two courses if they prefer.
Whenever possible we use produce from our own organic garden and orchard, but sometimes the elephants and monkeys get there first.
Please inform us of any special dietary requirements in advance.

RENT THE WHOLE GROUND FLOOR Groups of up to 10 or 12 can rent the whole ground floor, with 5 en-suite bedrooms, kitchen, dining room,
living room and swimming pool. This is on a self catering basis and a housekeeper and maintenance staff are included. There is a minimum of 3 days rental.
Contact us for more information.

PRIVATE CAMPING Our small private camping area is serviced by a washroom and utility area with showers and toilets. All camping must be pre-booked.

SELF CATERING FACILITIES are available to share for those using the orchard room, camping, or renting the whole ground floor.
Guests staying in the main house can also access the self catering facilities for a small charge.
There is a thatched open sided cooking and dining area and a braai stand (BBQ).

WI-FI free wi-fi access is available to those travelling with their own laptop or wi-fi enabled communication device

DIRECTIONS:
GPS reading S 17,50.227 E 025,44.235

FROM LIVINGSTONE
Leave Livingstone on the M10 Sesheke road. Pass through two National Park gates (park entry fees are not required) and after crossing the
Sinde River (often dry) look for the first 'Lay-by 1km' sign on the left. Take the first track immediately after this sign.
The track passes over the railway line, then divides. Take the sharp left and follow the track along the railway line, then round to the right
and drive towards the river until you reach the house. From the main road to the house is approx 1km. If you're not driving a 4X4 take care
not to ground your car on the dirt road.

FROM KAZUNGULA OR SESHEKE
Take the main M10 and continue towards Livingstone. Once you pass over the railway line, which crosses the road, you are quite close to the turning.
A few km after this you will see a triangular road sign on your left warning of bends. Turn right directly opposite this.
If you encounter the National Park entry gate you have gone too far. The track passes over the railway line, then divides.
Take the sharp left and follow the track along the railway line, then round to the right and drive towards the river until you reach the house.
From the main road to the house is approx 1km. If you re not driving a 4X4 take care not to ground your car on the dirt road.

AT THE FALLS

The Falls are commonly described as one of the seven natural wonders of the world and Zambia boasts some of the most spectacular views. They can be visited unguided. It’s easy to explore the area up-river, along the paths opposite the face of the Falls, or down to the Boiling Pot. At low water do not be tempted to walk out onto the rocks above the Falls, this is a very dangerous area. You will need shoes with grip, some water, a hat and sun screen. A raincoat can be hired at the Falls

To discover how the Falls were formed and what local customs and traditions surround them it is well worth taking a guided tour. These tours are extremely informative and end with a visit to the local art and crafts centre. Tours may be conducted from the Zambian or Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi River and last for 1½ hours in Zambia and 2 hours in Zimbabwe.

For guided tours guests meet at the Day Activity Centre for a short walk to the Falls.

Tours may be booked in the morning or afternoon and times are flexible.

The Tour includes National Park fees, the services of a qualified guide and bottled mineral water. Children under 12 are ½ price, and children under 2 are free.

Lunar Rainbow

When the moon is full, the sky is relatively clear and the Victoria Falls are at their peak flow, (Jan to May) huge rainbows appear through the mist at night

This unique event is visible the day before, the day of and the day after the full moon. The lunar rainbow is best seen at times of high water Jan to July. The months of March, April, May, June and July are ideal as clear skies are normal and the waters have subsided. It is then that the light of the moon is refracted through the mists that rise up from the base of Victoria Falls

At the rising of the full moon the park stays open late, on both sides of the falls and tour operators also offer special tours.

Visits to Livingstone Island

Dr. David Livingstone was paddled in a dug out canoe through swift rapids towards the roar and rising cloud of mist suspended above a cliff over which the whole of the Zambezi River plunged. The Makololo paddlers skilfully landed him on ‘Goat Island’ (now Livingstone Island) right on the lip of the chasm. A few steps through the small rainforest and, on the 16th November 1855, he gazed upon one of the most spectacular sights in the world – ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ (The Smoke that Thunders) which he named after his Queen as The Victoria Falls.

Livingstone Island

Visitors are picked up in a twin engine boat with powerful motors and a skilled skipper re-traces Livingstone’s approach to the island to witness the very best view of the Falls there is.  All visits to the island are during the ‘low water’ season, which usually begins in mid July and goes through to the end of January.   High water visits are not possible as the island is continuously covered in the spray/downpour from the Falls.

Pick up is from the jetty adjacent to the Royal Livingstone River Deck  by an aluminium 12 seater launch with twin water jet propelled engines which then transfers guests on a 5 minute ride to the island. Drop off is again at the Royal Livingstone jetty one hour later. The trip includes a short guided tour of the island, viewing the Falls and a light snack depending on the time of the morning visits.

The Livingstone Island Morning Breezer

Three morning visits of one and a half hours each (giving about one hour fifteen minutes on the Island).

Departing Royal Livingstone at:    07h30, 09h00 and 10h30

These visits include tea and coffee, soft drinks and light snacks

The Livingstone Island lunch

Departing Royal Livingstone at 12h30 and returning at 15h15

This includes a buffet lunch, with soft drinks, beer and wine.

The Livingstone Island Afternoon visit

One afternoon visit of two hours, departing Royal Livingstone at 15h30 and returning at 17h30

This visit includes tea, coffee, light snacks, soft drinks, beer and wine

Children under 12 are not encouraged to visit Livingstone Island.  If for any reason special permission is granted, children then pay the adult fare. Rates are changed mid year in April so please double check with us for price confirmation.

Left untouched from the original wild mopane woodlands and ‘bushveldt’ that has always been there and it is only a very short walk from the hotel to The Victoria Falls.

IN THE AIR

FLIGHTS OF THE ANGELS

To put the Victoria Falls into true perspective, they must really be seen from the air. The sheer size and grandeur of the spectacle becomes all the more clearer from above. The huge Zambezi River flowing slowly south with hippos and crocodiles clearly visible in the shallow waters, elephant quietly browsing on bright green islands as the water spreads across the full width of a great rent in the earth before crashing over the lip in a burst of spray and then squeezing into a narrow, foaming, blast of water rushing down the zig zag funnel of the gorges.  There are 4 ways to do this: -

From a Helicopter
A 15-minute flight will take you over the Falls and the Zambezi River. A 30-minute flight will take you over the Falls, the Batoka Gorge, the Zambezi River and the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.

Departure is from the Day Activity Centre or airfield and at the guests’ convenience. Flights begin at 08h00 and continue until last light. Children under 4 are ½ price and children under 1 are free.

From a Microlight
One person and an experienced pilot fly over the same sights as the other craft for either 15 or 30 minutes. Flights begin at 6h30 am and end at 09h30 am in the morning and start again at 15h00 pm and end at last light. The minimum age is 8 however if a child is younger but big enough to fit into the harness then they are permitted to fly. All Children are at full rate.

ON THE WATER

Guests are met by staff from the African Queen cruise boat and driven to the ‘Royal Landing’ jetty on the Zambezi River for boarding. The African Queen meanders slowly upstream along the length of the Mosi - oa - Tunya National Park looking for game on the way. Excellent hot and cold food is served on board and the bar is well stocked with spirits, good wines, beers and soft drinks. All food and drink is included in the price and served throughout the cruise by professional, friendly waiters making the whole experience probably the most luxurious cruise on the river.

Mid Morning Cruise

Zambezi River Safaris (Victoria Falls River Safaris)
The 4 x 4 vehicles of the river.  Aluminium hulled, jet propelled boats have been carefully designed so they can cross the ‘rough terrain’ of the river giving them access to places where other normal boats cannot go. This is a unique wildlife safari through the channels and rapids between the islands littering the wide part of the river just before the Falls. Elephant, hippo and wonderful birds are the main wildlife attractions and the views and sunsets are highlights.

Pick up at the Day Activity Centre and drive to the launch site, or start at the Royal Livingstone jetty, board the boat and set off. Pick-up for the breakfast safari is at 08h00, the lunch safari is 11h30 and the sunset safari is 16h00. Each lasts for 2 1⁄2 hours.

Light meals and / or snacks are provided on each safari. Drinks include mineral water, soft drinks, selected beers, tea and coffee.

Children 4 and under are free while children aged between 5 and 12 pay 65% of the full price.

Canoe Safaris on the Upper Zambezi
Probably the best way to appreciate the beauty, peace and wildlife of the Zambezi River above the Falls is to paddle slowly downstream in a canoe with some of the best wildlife guides in Africa. Watch the Pied Kingfisher hover and dive, listen to the haunting call of the fish eagle and the grunts of the hippo, see elephant, buffalo, and other animals come down to drink and explore the islands and waterways along the route. There is time to stop for something to drink and listen to tales of Livingstone’s journey to the Falls.

There are 5 1⁄2 hour safaris which begin in the morning and include tea, coffee, and soft drinks. A full day safari lasts 9 hours and includes a cold lunch with wine, soft drinks and beer. Guests are picked up from the Day Activity Centre at 08h00 and dropped off again at 13h30 for a half-day and 17h00 for the full day safari.

Children must be 12 or older to go for a full day and 10 or more to go on a 1⁄2 day safari. Price is the same for all ages.

Fishing
The Zambezi is famous for one of the great freshwater game fish – The Tigerfish. Powerful, swift predators Tigerfish are a thrill to catch and require a great deal of fishing skill with a good river specimen weighing over 15 lbs. Bream, or Tilapia, also live in large numbers in the river and although they don’t fight quite as aggressively as the Tiger a good 5 lb fish will quickly snap light tackle given half the chance. Spinners and lures are the most common method of catching these fish although using light tackle, a fly and a fly-rod is becoming very popular and brings an extra dimension to a very exciting sport.

Pick up is at the Day Activity Centre before a drive to one of the launch sites to board the boat and set off to the fishing grounds. A half-day trip either begins at 06h30 and ends at 13h30 or pick up is at 13h30 and drop off is at 18h30. The trip includes transfers, tea and coffee, soft drinks, beer and fishing tackle. No children under 12. Prices are the same for all ages.

The Livingstone Drift
The Livingstone Drift departs from the Day Activity Centre at 14h30. Clients are taken to Mukumba Village in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, where the trip begins. They are given a glass of wine to sip while the safety brief is being given before boarding the inflatable rafts. Each raft has it’s own guide who does all of the paddling while clients are invited to take in all of the sights and sounds whilst helping themselves to a cheese platter and South African wines.. The rafts slowly meander their way down to the take out point with their informative guides pointing out animals, bird life and flora & fauna of interest. Animals, which may be viewed, include hippos, crocodiles, elephants, giraffe, rhino, and various antelope, as well as numerous bird species. The drift ends at about 18 30hrs, still in the national park where the clients board open game drive vehicles for their drive back to the hotel.Rates include transfers, park fees, wine, mineral water and cheese platters

Min age limit is 12 yrs old.

WILDLIFE AND ANIMAL INTEREST

Chobe National Park.
The Chobe National Park in Botswana is only a 1-hour drive from Livingstone. It is one of the greatest game reserves in southern Africa and famous for the number of elephant that live there. The Chobe River flows lazily through the Caprivi flood plains and provides a haven for huge herds of buffalo and elephant, zebra, wildebeest and impala which are followed closely by predators including lion, hyena, the elusive leopard and the odd pack of the now rare wild dog. The bird life in particular is exceptional.

Travelling to Chobe includes an exciting crossing by boat of the Zambezi River at the point where the 4 countries of Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia meet. The Safari starts with a morning gameviewing cruise on the Chobe River with tea, coffee, drinks and light snacks being served on board. Large flocks of birds, big pods of hippos and very large crocodiles are all around. After disembarking, lunch is then taken at the Chobe Safari Lodge, which overlooks the Chobe River and the plains beyond. In the afternoon, open safari vehicles are used for a game drive into the park. The game drive meanders its way back to Customs and Immigration, before crossing the Zambezi and then transferring to Livingstone.

Chobe Day Trips begin at the Day Activity Centre at 07h30 and guests at Bushbuck will be picked up some time between 08.00 and 08.30, with guests will return to Bushbuck between 17.30 and 18h00 hrs. The trip includes National Park fees, transfers, the services of qualified wildlife guides, drinks and snacks on the boat, bottled mineral water on the game drive and lunch including one soft drink or beer. * Please note that there are visa implications for some nationalities. The price is the same for all ages although children under 12 are not encouraged to go on the Chobe Day Trip.

Elephant Back Safaris
It is not often one can climb onto the back of an African Elephant and set off at an easy rolling pace in search of other wild game; wild elephant, giraffe, buffalo and much more. This is an elephant ‘experience’ and the guides are highly trained experts in the behaviour of elephants and the wildlife around them.

Zambia 1⁄2 day trails are available both in the morning and afternoon.

The trails begin at Thorntree Lodge in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park which is an attractive lodge overlooking the Zambezi River. Tea, coffee and cordials are served upon arrival and after a short introductory talk and safety-briefing guests are introduced to the elephants and their handlers before mounting the great animals. The handler and no more than two guests on each animal then head off through the riverine bush, crossing the river in shallow water to get onto the many islands.

Halfway through the ride guests will dismount and interact with the elephants on the ground giving the guides an opportunity to make an interesting and informative explanation about the African Elephant and their relationship with man.

Safaris in the morning last about 4 hours and end with a full English breakfast and the opportunity to view a video of each guest’s elephant ride. The price includes transfers, tea, coffee, breakfast and cordial drinks. Pick-up from the Day Activity Centre is at 06h30, with drop off at approximately 11h00 hours.

The afternoon safaris go on for about 4 hours with snacks at the end of the day and the opportunity to view a video of each guest’s elephant ride. The price includes transfers, tea, coffee, snacks and cordial drinks. Pick-up from the Day Activity Centre is at 14h30, with drop off at approximately 19h00 hours.

Children must be 10 years old or more and are charged at full adult price. A guardian must accompany all children under 16 and a guardian must sign an indemnity form for all persons under 18.

Lion Encounter
The aim of lion encounter is to successfully reintroduce lions to parts of Africa that have lost their populations, have been identified for their protection, and where the reasons for previous losses have been mitigated to ensure the future of reintroduced populations.

STAGE 1
The first stage is about introducing cubs to their natural environment by taking them on bush walks daily. Guides and handlers act as the dominant members of the pride, and the cubs are only trained to the point where it is safe for us to walk with them. They are not tamed or domesticated; they are wild animals with their natural responses and instincts intact.
As the cubs grow, they become actively involved in their surroundings and start responding to hunting opportunities – with varying degrees of success.
At 18-months old the cubs move on to Day and Night Encounters, a crucial end phase of Stage 1. The young lions are taken out early morning and at dusk to hone their hunting techniques as a pride in preparation for the next stage. During these encounters we remain on a vehicle to ensure our safety but also allowing observations and research to be carried out on their progress.

STAGE 2
Reaching adulthood at 21⁄2 to 3 years old, the pride is now released into a fenced area populated by game such as impala, wildebeest, puku and zebra. All human contact is removed, though their progress is monitored from a research vehicle. The lions will have been disease tested, vaccinated, micro-chipped and radio-collared. They remain in Stage 2 until the pride is deemed stable and self-sustaining.

STAGE 3
The pride is now translocated to a managed ecosystem of at least  10,000 acres with no human residents, sufficient prey species to hunt and, crucially competitive species such as hyena. The lions in Stage 3 will give birth to cubs, that will be raised by the pride in their natural environment. The cubs born in Stage 3, with all the human avoidance behaviours of wild lions, will develop the skills to enable their reintroduction into appropriate game reserves, conservancies and National Parks across the African continent once old enough.

STAGE 4
The free-born offspring of Stage 3 can be released in one of several natural social groups as required by the needs of the end release area.

Lion encounter offer a number of activities so that you can observe and enjoy the programme. The availability of these will depend on the age of the lions at the time of your visit and we can check on availability for you.

Walking with lions
You will be collected from your lodge and transported to the Boma, or hospitality area. A welcome soft drink is ready for you, after which there is a short film (7 mins) about the lion release program and related research, community and conservation projects. After a safety briefing, you’re ready to meet the lion cubs for their bush walk. At all times you’ll be accompanied by experienced guides, handlers and scouts, allowing you the freedom to watch the lions as they play, hunt and explore their natural habitat. When the lions rest, this provides the perfect chance for you to get some once-in-a lifetime photos! During the bush walk, please feel free to ask any questions about lions as a species, or for updates on the progress of the release program. The lion walk lasts approximately 1hr to 1¼hr, after which there is either a full safari breakfast or drinks and snacks, depending on the time of day. Film footage of your lion walk will be shown, which you can purchase as a DVD. Other merchandise supporting the release program is also available. Custom Itineraries are available for groups, school tours and incentive groups

Children cannot undertake walking with lions - it is too dangerous as the lions will regard them as potential prey. However encounters for Cubs is available on request. This Children’s Activities means that the whole family can enjoy an unforgettable bush experience. While “the adults” are on their lion walk, your “cubs” will head off with our experienced staff for a nature exploration à la David Livingstone. Along the way they will discover some of the secrets of the African bush; its trees, plants, animals and insects, all part of the adventure to finding the cubs at the end of the trail.

Kindly note that cub viewing is from outside their enclosure.

The night encounter (Zambia only)
The Night Encounter is a total experience in the Dambwa Forest, close to our operational base in Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, and some 25 km from Livingstone. Here is the home of our lions that have “graduated” from walks to night (and dawn) hunting, the times when lions are naturally more active. It’s cooler, they can use the light to their advantage, and their night vision is sharp and excellent. You’re in the African bush, under the canopy of night stars, in an open game drive vehicle, tracking the young lions as they develop and practice their night-hunting skills. More than that, this is a rare opportunity to witness lions in the bush as a pride, to watch the dynamics of their social bonding, with our experienced guides and researchers at hand to tell more about the lineage and character of each individual lion, their standing in the pride hierarchy, and their changing physical features as they mature into adults.

A drive in lion country (Zambia only)
Named after the popular UK series, Lion Country, which features the program’s lions, these encounters can take place at dawn or later during the day. It’s a thrilling experience to watch lions roam free or around the vehicle, or race off to stalk and chase one of the game species that populate Dambwa – be it impala, puku, wildebeest, zebra, or the errant baboon.

The experience
Whether you’re on a Night Encounter or a Drive in Lion Country, the adventure starts as you enter Dambwa at our hospitality Boma, powered by solar energy – there is no electricity here. Relax and enjoy the romantic bush vista with snacks and drinks for the safety briefing, and then it’s into the game-drive vehicle to catch up with the sub-adult lions.

There is a maximum of 2 vehicles and 13 guests, and a delicious traditional dinner at the Boma tops off the evening on a Night Encounter (or safari breakfast if you’re on a dawn Drive), before you return to your hotel or lodge.

WILDLIFE VOLUNTEER WORK

If you would like a more in depth interaction with wildlife we are able to organise work placements in association with Lion Encounter.
These placements vary in their length:

Short term volunteering can be from half a day to 7 days. It is not residential but reasonably priced self catering accommodation is available at Bushbuck River House (extra to the cost).

Long term volunteering can be 14 days or 28 days and is residential with all meals included. Activities might include lion walks, meat preparation, enclosure cleaning, snare sweeps, cub sitting or cub descriptions, conservation education, health education, elephant research and wildlife conflict mitigation.
As a volunteer you must be prepared to undertake all types of work, some of it dirty and mundane. You must also have comprehensive medical and accident insurance that will cover this type of activity.

Horse Trails
Enjoy the African bushveldt and the Zambezi River riding along the riverbanks on the back of a horse. Whether you are an experienced rider or a novice it is a very pleasant and peaceful way to see game and enjoy the birds and the ride. Animals are less disturbed by a person on a horse and it is quite possible to watch game at very close quarters. Experienced guides lead these trails and riders are put with friends or groups of similar riding abilities.

There are 5-hour safaris which begin in the morning and include tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks. A half day safari now includes a cold lunch with wine, soft drinks and beer. Guests are picked up from the Royal Livingstone at 08h00 and dropped off there at 13h00 for a half-day. There is also the option of a 2 hour ride. This pick up time is flexible, but we recommend either 08 00hrs , or 1430 hrs.

Minimum age is 12 however if a child has ridden before then it is at the guides’ discretion. Price is the same for all ages.

Our guides are  selected individuals whom have grown up on the farm and have an intimate knowledge of every aspect of the land. Apart from the complete introduction you will receive regarding our Eland domestication project, they will share their knowledge of the indigenous plants, animals and even traditional herbal remedies with you throughout your walk.
You will arrive back at the lodge from your walk at approximately 10.45am, where after you can take the time to relax, have a swim and  refreshments.
At 11.15am, you will depart from the Game Farm and arrive back at your Hotel at 12.00pm.

At approximately 8.45pm, you will arrive back at the main lodge and depart from the Game Farm arriving back at your Hotel by 9.30pm.

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park – Game Drives and White Rhinos
The Park encompasses the Falls and stretches some 12 kms along the riverbanks of the upper Zambezi. White rhino, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, giraffe, zebra and several antelope species flourish here. Elephant also often visit the park swimming back and forth across the river.
Nomad African Travel offer their own game drives from Bushbuck River House. If these are not available we will book you with another company.
These drives are in the morning or the afternoon and last about 3 hours. The early morning drive begins at 06h30 and the mid morning drive begins at 09h45. Children must be a minimum of 15 years.

ADRENALIN SPORT AND ACTIVITY

WHITE WATER RAFTING
The rapids below the Falls are among the world’s wildest but also the safest due to deep water, steep canyon walls and no mid stream rocks. The top section of the Batoka Gorge, rapids 1 – 10, includes the highest concentration of grade 4 and 5 rapids anywhere in the world. Spectacular scenery, sunshine, warm water and superb rapids all make this one of the greatest white water venues in the world. Safety is paramount and all precautions are taken to avoid accidents including plenty of safety kayaks, highly trained guides with a minimum of 5 years experience, radio communications and comprehensive evacuation facilities.

Low water rafting runs from about mid July to the end of January. The best months are usually August and September.
A full day includes 21 rapids, lunch and 9 ½ hours in the day, including the walk out of the gorge and the drive home.
A half-day trip in the morning takes in rapids 1 – 10, breakfast, a light lunch and drinks for the climb out. The afternoon rafting includes lunch, rapids 11 – 21, and drinks for the climb out.

Full Day
Pick up at 08h30 getting back at about 17h00
Half Day in the morning. Pick up is at 08h30 getting back at about 13h30.
Half Day in the afternoon. Pick up is at 11h30 getting back at about 17h00.

High water rafting runs from approximately the end of January to mid July. IF THE WATER IS TOO HIGH THE RIVER IS CLOSED FOR SAFETY REASONS - this usually happens between April and May.

Full Day begins with breakfast and takes up to 8 1⁄2 hours through rapids 1 – 25 with lunch in the middle. This section of the river flows swiftly and features huge wave trains and whirlpools. There are drinks during the climb out.

Pick up is at 08h30 getting back at about 16h00. Please note that the water runs swiftly so half days are too short. The ‘full day’ can end sooner than 16h00 hrs depending on how fast the water is running at the time.

No children under 14 are allowed but if someone younger is big enough for the life jackets then they are welcome. Prices are the same for all ages.

River boarding and Rafting
‘Surf’ the Zambezi River below the Falls on a body-board accompanied by an expert. Wild and exciting, these trips combine those rapids which can be ‘surfed’ on the board with the bigger ones which have to be ridden from the raft. These trips link in with the rafting schedules and itineraries.

No children under 14 are allowed but if someone younger is big enough for the life jackets then they are welcome. Prices are the same for all ages. (Maximum 15 people)

Jet – Boat and Helicopter flight
Ride the rapids in a jet boat then, instead of clambering out of the gorge in the cable car, take a helicopter and complete a thrilling day by flying up the river skimming the water under the shadows of the cliffs, rising out of the gorge for a quick look at the Falls before landing. As above, there are two departures a day and they include beer and cool drinks after the boat ride. Pick up is at the Day Activity Centre at 07h30 or 12h30 with a half an hour drive to the edge of the gorge. Thereafter walk into the gorge and board the boat. The boat ride lasts for ½ an hour and the helicopter flight for 15 minutes.

Children must be 7 or older. Prices are the same for all ages.

Bungi Jumping
With the Falls behind you and the river rushing below the Victoria Falls Bridge this is certainly no ordinary bungi jump. At 111 metres it is also one of the highest jumps in the world and the adrenaline rush is as wild as the river itself.

There are two bungi options: A single jump on your own or a tandem jump with a partner. You meet at the Day Activity Centre at a time convenient to yourself and stroll to the Victoria Falls Bridge with your passport, passing through the Zambian immigration point. Including the walk the entire experience takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. The bungi supervisors are available from 09h00 until 16h00 and you jump whenever you feel like it.

Bridge swing  is similar to gorge swing but takes place in a different location as you step off the centre of the bridge. It uses a body harness and you take a short run off the edge and into the gorge where you fall, then bounce a few times before being pulled back up onto the bridge.

Abseiling, Gorge Swing and Flying Fox
There are 3 ways to release adrenaline by going over the edge of a cliff face.

Abseiling Only
Slide 53 meters down the gorge on the end of a rope either facing the cliff face or looking down into the void. The walk out is up quite a steep slope but it is not far.

Flying Fox Only
Is a cable slide across the gorge high above the floor. You can sit on the ‘chair’ or be strapped, face down, looking at the ground far below as you fly across the gorge. No walk out is necessary because you are pulled back.

Gorge Swing Only
Fling yourself over the edge in a body harness falling some 50 meters and swinging right across the gorge and back until the momentum runs out and you are lowered to the ground to walk out.You may spend a whole day doing all three activities as often as you wish. Start early in the morning and spend 8 1⁄2 hours dropping over the edge and climbing back up again. Transfers, a cold lunch, iced water and soft drinks are all provided with beers at the end of the day. Pick up is at the Day activity Centre with a drive of about 20 minutes to the edge of the gorge. A half-day either begins at 09h00 and ends at 14h00 or pick up is at 13h30 and drop off is at 17h30. A full day begins at 09h00 and ends at 17h30.Children are welcome as long as they are big enough to fit into the harnesses.

Children under 12 are 1⁄2 price and an adult must accompany all children under 14.

Segway Tours:
Segway machines are based at the falls resort. The guides will take the clients on an educational tour along the footpaths, around the Zambezi Sun and on behind the Royal Livingstone. They also go on the foot paths through the bush area between the hotels and the road with the guide pointing out places of interest, birds, trees and game on the resort.  The Segway machines are similar to a battery operated scooter which is controlled by the movement of the rider’s weight.  As the rider leans forwards the Segway will begin to move forwards, the further forward you lean the fast the Segway will go (cutting of at a limit).  To stop, stop leaning forward and stand up straight. When the rider leans back the Segway also moves backwards.  Balance is easy as you are holding onto the handlebars.  Steering is also easy by using the swivelling hand hold similar to that of a motorbike’s accelerator, which controls your direction left and right turns. Each tour includes a 15min training session and a 30 min Segway riding tour.

Golf
The Livingstone Golf Club was built and opened as an 18 hole golf course in 1908 to supply entertainment and sport for the European settlers. The layout of the course then is not known and it is certain that playing conditions at their best were rough but much good sport was obtained over these links by the early pioneers of the game.

In November 2005, the Livingstone Golf Club leased the property to Little Park Ltd and they started a full restoration of the course and clubhouse. The restoration, done in conjunction with the National Heritage Conservation Commission, saw the opening of the clubhouse and the first nine holes of the 18 hole golf course on 01 July 2006. The second nine holes has been opened on 01 May 2007

The Livingstone Royal Golf & Country Club is an 18 hole par 72 course. Peter Matkovich has redesigned the full 18 holes.Pick up is from the Royal Livingstone reception or the Day Activity Center. The standard pick up time is at 08 30hrs in the morning and 14 00hrs in the afternoon. The rates include transfers, green fees and caddy fees. The Railway Museum and a Tour of Livingstone Town
Livingstone was an important town in southern Africa during the first days of European settlement and the beginnings of Colonial rule. It is well worth spending a couple of hours touring this historic town with a guide and learning about its past and the colourful people who created it.

For many years Livingstone was the Railway Capital of a vast region and much of its wealth came from the railways. The museum is dedicated to that past and covers its history from the days when the bridge crossed the gorge to the building of the great TamZam railway in the late 1970s. For train buffs there are a unique collection of ancient locomotives and coaches.

Each tour lasts 2 hours and may be booked in the morning or afternoon usually at 08h00 or 1h.00. These tours may be combined with other historical or cultural tours to make a full morning or day out with a very good lunch.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Sindie Village, Twabuka Basic School and Pre-School

Responsible tourism – Nomad African Travel and Bushbuck River House are particularly committed to preserving wildlife and the environment and supporting the local community through tourism development. Our base in Zambia has enabled us to develop meaningful links with the local community and consequently our tourist activities have a real and lasting positive impact on those who live locally. In order to encourage a mutually supportive relationship between local people and the tourism industry we offer the opportunity to visit our local village and school. The charge is only U$30 and half of this is for transport and driver, whilst the other half goes to the school fund. Additional donations are always welcome and go in their entirety to our school fund.

Twabuka basic school

In the summer of 2010 we worked, for the fourth time, with pupils and staff from The Coopers' and Company Coborn School, UK. Nomad organised and guided a tailor made tour of Namibia, Botswana and Zambia for thirty five members of the school, ending in Livingstone. The Essex school had raised funds to build a new pre-school, the third phase of school building in the Sinde area. Whilst in Zambia they spent ten days painting and decorating the pre-school, making furniture and forging links with the children and the community.

When we first visited the old village school in 2005 there were 27 pupils who were taught in a mud hut, but by January 2011 the school numbers were almost 200 and the pre-school had enrolled almost 80. The pre-school has a classroom, medical room and play area whilst the main school now consists of five classrooms and a kitchen and dining area, so that the school can receive food aid and provide all children with a daily cooked meal. The school is serviced by a total of four toilet blocks.

A further development is the Iji (egg) project, an income generating initiative which also teaches small business skills. The current 140 chickens will soon be increased to 200, supplying the local villages and lodges with fresh eggs.
Many of our clients have visited the school and have donated funds. We would like to thank all of those who have contributed for their interest and kindness. All the money donated goes directly to the projects; staff at Nomad give their time free of charge in order to realise these initiatives. This work has been described as one of the most significant developments ever undertaken in the Sinde area of Livingstone.

Community volunteer work and fundraising
If you would like to get involved with Twabuka School whilst you are in Africa, or on your return, we are happy to organise this. You might wish to spend anything from a day to a month helping the staff at the school, or you might be able to help with organisation, administration or fundraising for one of the following initiatives when you get home:

  • Establishing a sponsorship programme for pupils and staff

  • Developing the school web site

  • Raising funds to equip the school, particularly solar power

  • Developing the curriculum through additional activities

  • Establishing a medical post at the Pre-school

Please note that all volunteer work has to be completely financially self supporting and we can give you an estimation of the costs involved. If you are involved in an extended stay and volunteer work we can provide you with reasonably priced self catering accommodation.

Chief Mukuni's Village
Mukuni's Village is a Royal village which was founded around the 13th Century. It is home to about 7,000 Leya people. The chief has invited visitors into his village to get a glimpse of how his people have lived for generations and to learn a little about their traditional customs and beliefs. The Chief’s guides and the people of the village are more than happy to show visitors their huts and take you inside, explain how they are built and decorated, introduce you to various craftsmen and women at work and ask you to taste some traditional foods and beer. This is a working village, not a purpose built tourist attraction, and it is a privilege to be welcomed into their lifestyle

This is the largest market in Livingstone - colourful, vibrant and bustling with activity.  Here the local people sell everything; "chitengies" (brightly coloured fabric), fruit and vegetables, grains and rice, curios, pots and pans made out of old motorcars, farm tools, chickens, beads and clothes.  This is where the people of Livingstone come to shop!  A guide will accompany you and with the help of some bargaining skills some very interesting and authentic artefacts can be bought. This tour is a most unusual and rewarding experience for the clever shopper.

Visas

Visa Fees are NOT included in our rates and are always for the clients account;

Some nationalities are required to pay for a visa to enter Zambia and also Zimbabwe if they are doing activities there (such as visiting the Falls on the Zim side). For most passport holders, this can be purchased at the airport or border post; however some Nationalities are required to obtain a Zambian visa before they travel. Please check with the relevant Consular.

If guests are doing a day trip into Botswana or Zimbabwe they need to request for a double or multiple entry visa for Zambia and check that their passport is stamped with the appropriate D/E or M/E. The agent in Zambia will not be held responsible for visas and clients always need to check what they have been given, request for a receipt and keep it with them until departure.

If Nationalities requiring visa payments are TRANSITING through Zambia and not spending their first night here, they will need to purchase a visa. Each ‘transit’ requires a new visa.

If you are departing from the same airport or border post, it is advisable to get a Double Entry visa Due to costs.

Please ensure you have the necessary funds available in United States Dollars, for the fee.

Botswana: Some nationalities are required to pay for a visa to enter Botswana.  For most passport holders, this can be purchased at the airport or border post; however some Nationalities are required to obtain a Botswana visa before they travel.  Please check with the relevant Consular.

If you are doing a Chobe Day trip or a transfer into Botswana then Bushtracks needs to know the day before to reduce delays at the border.
